Acute Appendix Treatment

  • Appendicitis is an acute inflammation of the appendix. Appendix is a finger projection at the junction of the small bowel and the large bowel. It has a small orifice and is a vestigial organ. The most common disease affecting it is infection or acute inflammation. Commonly children and the elderly are affected. But it can be seen in any age group of patients.

The most common symptom with which patients present is lower abdominal pain or right sided pain localizing to the location of appendix. This can be diagnosed with ultrasound and sometimes when the appendix cannot be visualized CT scan of the abdomen may be necessary.

This is a serious health condition and needs immediate treatment, if untreated for 24 hours after diagnosis it may rupture and may cause systemic infection (sepsis). To get rid away of this you need to go through simple surgery to remove your appendix and luckily you can live without an appendix normally.

    Appendix Symptoms

Multi diverse symptoms can be seen in appendicitis patients and generally need immediate medical care. Most of the symptoms are mentioned below:

     - Severe pain (in the abdomen, mid-abdomen or right lower abdomen) or at the belly button.
     - Fever and Chills
     - Loss of appetite
     - Diarrhea & Constipation
     - Nausea & Vomiting
     - Flatulence

These are the common symptoms and may vary depending upon the age group and the position of your appendix. If you have any symptoms immediately consult your doctor or visit us.

    Appendix Causes

The infection in the appendix due to blockage in the lining causes appendicitis. The bacteria, virus and parasites multiply and the infection gets worse with every day passed resulting in that inflammation, swelling and pus on the appendix site. If not treated immediately it can cause serious damage.

    Appendicitis Diagnosis

To diagnose appendicitis, the doctor will take an overview of your symptoms and examine your abdomen. There are a few procedures and tests you have to undergo to diagnose appendicitis. Most of them are mentioned below:

     - Physical exam (A gentle pressure by your doctor on the painful site is applied. If the pain gets severe then the appendicitis pain will often feel worse.)
     - Blood test
     - Urine test
     - Imaging test (In a few cases X-ray, an abdominal ultrasound, CT scan, and MRI to confirm appendicitis)

    How To Prevent From Appendicitis

There is no certain proof which claims to be the best prevention of appendicitis but consuming a high-fiber diet with fresh fruits, vegetables and grains may help you. In addition to that, buttermilk is considered very effective in preventing the bacteria growth in the appendix.

    Appendicitis Treatment

In mild cases or normal appendicitis, doctors preferred antibiotics which might improve the health of the selected patients, but to a larger extent surgery is needed. For the treatment of appendicitis, doctors perform surgery via laparotomy or laparoscopic in which the appendix is removed.

MH Surgery with its advanced technology and highly experienced team of doctors and surgeons help you with your treatment. If you have any symptoms of appendicitis please visit us.

  • Surgery

There are two types of surgeries that are offered for patients suffering from acute appendicitis. Open appendectomy and the other most common type of surgery is Laparoscopic appendectomy. Broadly these surgeries based on the technique can be classified as OPEN SURGERY and MINIMALLY INVASIVE SURGERY.

    OPEN SURGERY- Open Appendectomy

Open surgery involves open technique. Here an incision is made on the right side of the lower abdomen at Mc Burney's point. The abdomen is entered and the appendix is identified. The appendix is removed in an open technique. The surrounding structures are evaluated and the incision is closed.

Open surgery is usually more painful than the minimally invasive surgeries. But there are various medications that we use to help you have better pain control.

For this surgery you may need a complete blood count (CBC), chemistry profile, PT, PTT. Depending on your medical history, we may require additional testing: chest X-Ray, EKG, medical clearance from your primary care physician, cardiac clearance from your cardiologist, additional blood work and finally Anesthesiology clearance.

We recommend that you have your blood work done before having the surgery performed. If this is not possible, please notify the surgical scheduling team at 8884200030.

    MINIMALLY INVASIVE SURGERY- Laparoscopic Appendectomy

Laparoscopic surgery involves minimally invasive technique. Here we make small 5 mm incisions on the left side and lower part of the abdomen and small 10 mm incisions near or at the umbilical area. The abdomen is entered and the appendix is identified. The appendix is removed either with a loop or a stapling device. The surrounding structures are evaluated and the incision is closed.

Laparoscopic surgeries are usually less painful than the open surgeries. We still give you pain medications and nerve blocks so that you feel comfortable and are able to walk about six hours after the surgery.

For this surgery you may need a complete blood count (CBC), chemistry profile, PT, PTT. Depending on your medical history, your physician may require additional testing: chest X-Ray, EKG, medical clearance from your primary care physician, cardiac clearance from your cardiologist, additional blood work and finally Anesthesiology clearance.

We recommend that you have your blood work done before having the surgery performed. If this is not possible, please notify the surgical scheduling team at 8884200030.

    PRE-OPERATIVE TESTING

You may need a complete blood count (CBC), chemistry profile, PT, PTT.
