  • Laparoscopic Appendectomy Surgery in Bangalore

Laparoscopic appendectomy is a minimally invasive surgery to remove the appendix. The surgery is performed via small incisions. Laparoscopic appendectomy is now the standard of care for the diseased appendix. Using the camera and small instruments the procedure is completed under general anesthesia. It is one of the most common procedures that are performed laparoscopically. The most common indications for surgery are acute or chronic appendicitis and tumors of the appendix.

  • Surgery

The appendix is located on the right-side lower abdomen. The surgery involves removing the appendix entirely up to the base of the caecum. All patients undergoing surgery will need to be medically optimized preoperatively. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia.

After anesthesia and intubation, the laparoscopic appendectomy begins with insufflation of the abdomen using carbon dioxide. Next, two small incisions are made in the abdomen for trocar placement . Utilizing a camera (laparoscope) and long instruments the appendix is identified and is retracted. This allows for exposure of the region of the base of the appendix. Careful dissection is carried out to achieve a critical view of the base and the caecum. Once this view is adequately achieved, the isolated base is carefully transected. Electrocautery or harmonic scalpel is then used to separate the blood supply of the appendix. This completes the procedure and the specimen is retrieved. The patient is then taken to the postoperative recovery area after the surgery.

  • Patient education

Most patients go home on the day of or the day after surgery. Patients can return to eating their usual meals at home. Mild to moderate pain is common for a few days and can be managed with pain medications as prescribed. Dressings on the incisions can typically be removed the day after surgery, at which time patients can resume regular showers, but some incisions may require special care as instructed by the surgeon.

Complications after laparoscopic appendectomy are rare few people may pain, which goes away after a few days or week in most people. The most serious complication is when structures near the base of the appendix or cacecum are damaged. One of these structures is the Caecumwhich is the large bowel to which the appendix is connected and the small intestine. Damage to these can cause leakage of intestinal fluid and symptoms of abdominal pain, fever, and sepsis can happen. Patients who experience worsening pain, fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, or sepsis should see a doctor.
